Brain Dump Tutorial and Freebie

Clear you mind with a brain dump

Sometimes the thing holding you back from getting started is just everything floating around in your head! The grocery list, the to-list, don’t forget that appointment, when is trash day, Mom’s birthday is coming up, call to make a doctor appointment, don’t forget to floss, and so on. I know when this is going on in my brain that it is time for a brain dump. Get it all out and organized and then make a plan of attack.

You can brain dump in any way that works for you, but you are welcome to use the free printable download provided here. It is organized into sections to help you prioritize tasks. It starts with the to-do list just to get those up front and ready to be tackled. I also allow for a place for emails, texts, and calls. Hopefully those are easy to complete and mark off too! Don’t do them yet though - finish getting it all out!

As you move down the page, we get into the middle range of things to do. On the left is a “remember” area. Maybe this is an upcoming birthday or meeting you have to prepare for next week - not urgent, not needing immediate attention, but you don’t want to forget. Next to that is a place for a schedule. You can write the appointment that you called about or note when your next turn at a carpool is. The “Notes” area you can use as you see fit!

The bottom of the page is for the big ideas, goals, and dreams you don’t want to lose, but they are taking up too much bandwidth in your brain at the moment. Once they are written down you can take your time to figure out which items have actions to take and which you just want to keep for a rainy day to ponder more.

Now that everything is on the page, start off with tackling the easy things that you can quickly check off the list. This is always a great way to feel accomplishment and motivation to keep going! And once those tiny tasks are done taking up brain power, you can move on to the bigger things. Keep moving through the page until you are down to the bottom half of the page.

Now that your brain is clear and easy tasks are complete you are ready to open up to the big ideas, dreams, and goals. Maybe now is not the time to do these things, but it might be a good idea to put these in a more permanent storage area to keep them fresh. I would recommend an electronic file that you can access either from your phone or computer when inspiration strikes you. Or get a notebook that can be dedicated to these lofty ideas and jot them down when they come to mind. When they are ready for next steps - move them to the to-do list!
